MAP to Event

The Santa Cruz Institute of Contemporary Arts is launching the first Santa Cruz Kinetic Sculpture Race at this years River Arts Festival.   The race will take place on Sunday at 11 a.m.

"The Kinetic sculpture race is an organized contest of human-powered works of art where the kinetic aspects of the art are intertwined with the movement of the piece. The engineering is combined with the physical endurance for a 3/4 mile course.  The works of art are pushed, pulled or pedaled by the artist and should reflect the true spirit of kinetic art.  The artist who crosses the finish line first is declared, by all rules of a fair race, the best artist in the world, without dispute.  Pedal powered and human powered sculptures start at 5 minute intervals and each category has it's own champion.  Once the best artists in the world are declared they lead the procession over the Water Street Bridge to San Lorenzo Park where they will be honored by their adoring fans."

Kinetic Sculpture Racing is a competitive outdoor activity in which artists build sculptures on wheels to be raced.  Sculpture Racing is a ¾ mile race from bridge to bridge.  Sculpture Racing takes fine art out of the galleries and museums and into the streets.  The artist that crosses the finish line first is declared the worlds best artist, without dispute.

Sculptures will be accepted through submissions and juried in April.  The three member jury will be announced in March.  There is a non-refundable submission fee of $10.

Two categories – Pedal Powered and Human Powered.  The Pedal powered category will start 5 minutes in advance of the human powered category and each category will be judged separately.

Pedaled Powered – These can be any type of sculpture that is powered by pedaling through a gear system.  There are no limitations to the design however the overall sculpture should reflect the use of kinetic movement in both it’s movement and it’s art.  The sculpture must be durable enough to withstand a course of ¾ miles.

Human Powered – These are sculptures that are pushed or pulled, no motors are allowed.  There are no limitations to the design, however the overall sculpture should reflect the use of kinetic movement in both it’s movement and it’s art.  As an example we are not looking for someone to use a shopping cart filled with items, we are looking for submissions that create a kinetic sculpture.    The sculpture must be durable enough to withstand a course of ¾ miles.
